The Bostitch MIIIFN Pneumatic Flooring Cleat Nailer lets you create professional-looking floors quickly and comfortably. Its high-speed pneumatic operation rapidly drives nails into both unfinished and pre-finished hardwood flooring, and its long-grip handle allows you to maintain a comfortable posture when working. Amazon.com

Whether you’re a professional flooring installer or a weekend do-it-yourself warrior with a load of hardwood flooring staring at you, this nailer is far and away one of the best ways to get the job done.

Yes, it’s spendy, especially if you’re a homeowner just planning to do a couple of rooms. But if you weigh the cost of a professional installation, you come out miles ahead doing it yourself, even with this purchase, and you can work at your own pace instead of rushing a rental back to the store. If price is an obstacle, you might consider a manual nailer; you’ll pay about half as much, but you’ll do more than twice the work!

Professionals love this model, and for good reason. It’s made of aircraft-grade aluminum, so it’s light and strong. Your compressor needs to run between 60 and 100 psi, but best performance came in between 70 and 90 psi. There’s practically no learning curve, so with just a light tap of the mallet, you’ll be cruising along your flooring with 420 inch-pounds of nailing pressure.

The base plates – one is for half-inch planks, the other, ¾-inch -- are nice and wide, giving you rock-solid stability, and the magazine holds 110 fasteners, keeping reloading of your 1-1/2- to 2-inch cleats to a minimum.

We like the long-reach handle, but a shorter version is available, too. If you’re putting down hardwood or engineered flooring, you’d be doing yourself a favor by picking up this nailer. -- Kris Jensen-Van Heste

The Bostitch story
Originally known as the Boston Wire Stitcher® Company, the first syllables of the words "Boston" and "Stitcher" were joined to make "Bostitch®", and the name was adopted for product use after the manufacture of machines began. Thomas Briggs, the founder, invented in 1896 a new kind of user friendly Wire Stitcher designed for fastening books, calendars, checks, hat boxes, etc. This machine made a staple or stitch as it was called from a coil of wire. It was called the Boston Wire Stitcher and the company was named the Boston Wire Stitcher Company. In 1903 the company invented a foot operated stapling machine that used pre-formed staples. These staples were not collated but had to be slid off of a track into the magazine of the machine. Later they were collated with paper and then glue. Soon the Boston Wire Stitcher Company was developing various kinds of staplers for industrial markets. In 1930 the Bostitch® Sales Company was formed to sell Bostitch® products, and in 1948 the Boston Wire Stitcher Company officially became Bostitch®, Inc. The first Coil Nailer from Bostitch, the N2, came on the scene in 1965, and the rest is history. Today, Bostitch sells a huge range of nailers, compressors, and other products, and is a leader in the industry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pneumatic Palm Nailer February 27, 2002

By D. Beach

I recently retired and have undertaken a project to build a woodworking shop-garage. Swinging a hammer has become a very tiresome chore, and I was considering the purchase of a framing nailer. Upon reviewing information from various manufacturers, I realized that a framing nailer is a very specialized tool.
However, I happened to run across information about palm nailers. In reviewing the information provided by Amazon, I read that a palm nailer can be used for nailing any size nail and in many different applications. I could see where this would be a more useful tool than a framing nailer. I purchased the Bostitch PN100 kit, and immediately started using it with 16d nails in framing my new shop. I then used 10d nails in decking the roof. All I can say is this nailer is wonderful!! It drives nails quickly, at any angle, and in a limited amount of space. You do have to be careful to make sure that the alignment of the nail with the nailer is correct; if not, bent nails will result. However, with just a little practice, nailing becomes an effortless operation. I would recommend this as a general purpose nailer to anyone. I might also add that I own a brad nailer and a roofing nailer made by Porter Cable, and a 1/4 inch crown stapler, and the Bostitch nailer works as well as any of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb product and exceptional value! April 4, 2011

THis product is lightweight, well balanced, and has a soft rubber grip. There are a lot of finishing nail guns in the $20-50 range, after a lot of searching around I opted for this one. I have owned a few other brands some costing more and some less..generally after thousands of nails some problems would arise.. this is normal wear and tear and its easier to purchase a new and reliable gun over rebuilding the many seals and pistons in the gun.
My first option was to purchase a rebuilt Bostitch or similar high dollar gun - I decided against that seeing how many of the guns took beatings under the abuse of contractors.
Next I ruled out Chicago because the body seemed flimsy and prone to leaks at the main valve seal.Previously owning a Central Pneumatic unit (which comes with a case for the same price) the only reason I didnt buy another is the saftey is bulky and prone to getting bent out of shape. The gun then doesnt fire as easily, and you have to make sure the tip is pressed AND the safety is satisfied.
This gun has good reviews all around, solid construction, and it shoots Brad nails upto 2" (all the way down to 1/2"). No case included and I would replace the air inlet adapter with quality one. Oil frequently.

This is an update. Have used my nail guns and can't say enough good about them. I was able to get all the needed staples, brads, finish nails, framing nails. Was able to get all of them at orchard supply no problem.I had a project I wanted to do after recieving the nail gun set.I was able to use my finish nailer and the framing gun.I test fired the brad and staple gun also. These babys are great. I don't think buying the big name guns justify the big price when you can do as good with this great set. Like I have stated before I now do as much business with Amazon as possible. The prices are great and the service is #1. You do need air to run these guns but don't seem to be real demanding for air.I'm doing projects around my home now that I have put off. There is nothing better then having the right tool and do it yourself not to speak of the money you save doing it yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easily one of my favorite power tools February 20, 2009

By Tim in Mint Hill

I purchased this particular item because of its better range of brad sizes it can handle, and the Porter Cable name, good reviews, etc.
I have been using this nailer quite often, and am now left with several boxes of finish nails I will likely never use again. No more getting the nailsets out to bury a finish nail down on a piece of trim, etc.
The options for using this are endless. Just last night, I needed to make a couple wood boxes to hold scrap in my workshop area, and had some scrap 3/8" plywood, perfect for the boxes. Using this nailer, I could quickly apply a little glue, between corners of the box, and shoot a couple brads in and done. Can't do that with finish nails on plywood without splitting out alot.
Great tool, highly recommended, easy to handle.

I am very happy with this nailer. Nailer comes with second tip for attaching metal connectors when framing. I like the plastic collated design because you can shoot full round head nails. Also comes with 2 triggers so that you can fire nails by holding the trigger and bumping the tip or fire nails only if the tip has been pressed down and you then pull the trigger. Great gun.

4.0 out of 5 stars If it was made in USA it would of been 5 stars but still, Already worth the cost! October 3, 2010

By Corkery Woodworks

I am a flooring contractor and after using $480 flooring nailers for the past 7 years, I can say this is well worth it. My previous nailer bit the dust in the middle of a job and I rented one from "rip off Depot" and after spending $70 on a day and a half rental I figured I would order this one to at least get me past this flooring job and then cross my fingers for the next. I can honestly say that this is as good or better than both of my Bostich staple nailer and cleat nailer (each over $450!!!). Also, keep this in mind, all these nailers are made in China, none are made in the USA anymore. Bostich or aka Stanley used to make their nailers in the USA and it was worth the price but they have since fired all they american laborers and have not lowered their prices dispite the 1/4 cost of building the nailer since being built in China, now they are made in China for about 1/4 the cost and the rest is now in the wallets of CEO's of Stanley/Bostich so it really doesn't matter anymore( damn shame to). Stanley /Bostich is simply riding on their name. All the brands are pretty much the same now a-days unfortunetly. The 7 year warranty caught my eye and is key. This is definetly a no brainer. Here are a few obvious perks ...
Freeman Nailer ($190) 7 year warranty - Bostich - ($470 +) 7 year warranty
Freeman Nailer T, L & Staples ($190) Bostich - Staples only! want L cleats? Spend another $470 ($960+)
Freeman Made in China Bostich - Made in China
Freeman Decent durable plastic Carrying Case Bostich - Cardboard Box & some used tape
Freeman Parts - Aluminum Bostitch Parts - "aircraft grade aluminum" i.e. ...um, Aluminum!
Freeman Rubber Mallet, Oil, wrenches Bostich - Rubber Mallet
The bottom line is this: If this Freeman nailer gets me past 5 years of service then It did the job and I made an Excellent investment. If it gets me past 2 years than I still made out. Not to mention they also have a seven year warranty and I did call their support before hand and tell them I had a broken one and they said they would send me a new one with shipping sticker to send old one back ( I always do this with expensive tools), so they seem to be standing behind their warranty. Also, this nailer shoots three different type of nails! So save your $280 for something else nad buy the Freeman. Only thing they need to do now is make the damn thing in the USA then I would REALLY be impressed and give the 5 stars! Also, "Aircraft grade Aluminum" is like saying my t- shirt is made of "aircraft grade cotton" ... there are 15 grade types of Aircraft aluminum and guess what- even Harbor Frieght tools are technically "aircraft grade Aluminum". Once again Bostich/Stanley is trying to screw with our heads, banking on hte name and robbing you blind.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm never picking up a hammer again! August 19, 2010

By Jason Peacock

I giggled the first time I used this, it drives nails with such ease - as if the wood was butter.
It's great for metal fasteners and tight spaces, it gets into all the small corners where neither a full size nail gun nor a hammer would fit.
The small size is a perfect fit for my (large) hand, and squeezes into smaller places than the larger model palm nailer.
The magnet holds the nails well so you can drive them with one hand, just press and the nail is quickly hammered (vibrated?) into place.
You can stop early and leave the nail head up if you're just tacking things, or come back later and finish the nail flush.

This is one of the best tools I have ever had. Operates flawlessly every time. I use Bostich nails/brads because they are easier to find (all sizes up to 2") and the nailer works perfectly. The "height" adjustment is easy. The "jam release" mechanism is great - but the tool has never jammed. Excellent Product! James Willard

5.0 out of 5 stars Great tool that does it's job without much babysitting. October 14, 2009

By E. Weber

Amazon Verified Purchase

Was skeptical, as I usually am, but this tool lives up to its name.
Have installed alot of 3/4" 2-1/4" plank oak flooring with it so far, have had 1 misfire. Instructions say to not hit it too hard, but I found that it takes a good solid whack to get it to fire completely. Once you do that, it's a breeze. Always seats where it's supposed to, and fires the nails to the right depth. Too light a whack will not sink the nails.
It's really solidly built and balanced really nicely.
One drawback, I wish I could check magazine level without opening it up, but it's not too bad. It makes a hollower sound when you're dry firing.

Product Description

Pneumatic Flooring Nailer for installing hardwood floors between 1/2 - 3/4 inches thick. Used by many contractors and DIY floor installers this tool works well for all skill levels. The sturdy long handle allows for great control and keeps you from breaking your back. The nail magazine holds 100 floor nails, and nail length can vary between 1 1/2" to 2" depending on what you need. The air inlet is standard 1/4". Air consumption is low at 4.5 CFM and allows you to use a small compressor. Input pressure should be controlled between 60 and 100 PSI. With a little practice this tool will allow you to lay hundreds of square feet per day. Depending on the type of wood you will need to vary the input pressure. Bamboo is very hard and brittle and requires a low pressure to prevent damage. Teak and some other very dense hard woods will require 100 PSI. You should test on a piece of scrap plank to make sure you are getting good results. The pneumatic flooring nailer is used by placing it on the edge of a piece of hardwood flooring. The included mallet is then used to strike the actuator and fire the nail in. The most difficult part of the process is just moving the pneumatic flooring nailer around. Include in the kit is a Carrying Case, Pneumatic Flooring Nailer , Safety Glasses, Air Tool Oil, Base Plate, S3 Hex Key S4 Hex Key S5 Hex Key Wrench, and Instruction Manual.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Nailer July 7, 2011

By Mary and Dan

I bought this tool to put in 900sq feet of strip oak flooring. After putting 400sq, I must say I'm very happy with my purchase. It comes with a nice case, hammer, safety glasses and face/blind nailing attachments. When you do a job (any job) the tools you use can make or break the project. Using this nailer has been a pure utter joy. This is a no brainier. The cleat sits on the sub floor and against the tongue. A simple tap on the trigger and slam-BAM done!

By J. Lipton

This was my first attempt at installing hardwood floors. Purchasing a nail gun was a top priority. The market is limited but the few nailers out there all come with high marks. I chose this particular model based upon the few excellent reviews on this forum. The gun sits easily and quickly each time. The different types of nails/staples/ cleats receive their own praise. This Hard Core nailer is a tough find and I have not been able to find anyone that stocks it, other than Sterlingtek on Amazon. The gun has worked flawlessly, and comes in a complete package. Just tapping the gun is enough, no need to slam. Works great each time and have installed about 1000 sq feet without a single problem. Great purchase and was jumping for joy at the price, it was a lot cheaper then the ones at our local Home Depo or renting one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Siding Contractor November 12, 2009

i have to tell everyone i can about how good these guns are. i have been installing siding, triming houses, and framing for 20 years and have always been a hitachi and makita guy, but since i've started using these guns i have no reason to buy them again. i have been forced to branch off into other areas like roofing and interior trim. I've bought several of their guns and i have had zero problems with them. great service, quick shipments, and a very dependable product. Freeman deserves a bid kudo for bringing a great product to us at a price everyone can afford.

I bought this product to build a large deck. I'm very pleased with the performance. Weight/balance is good. Worked well with a variety of nail sizes (2 3/8, 3, 3 1/2, straight and ring shank). My only compliant is that the gun stops working when the gun gets low on nails (3-4 nails) due to the nails losing alignment. It's not a big deal since it works fine once you load more nail strips. However, it was frustrating diagnose the condition the first time.

5.0 out of 5 stars suprisingly good. May 17, 2010

I had read the reviews so i went ahead and purchased this for about 35.00 shipped. I got it in the mail and opened it up.The case seemed very cheap. Now i pull out the nailer, It seems like WEN didnt pay much attention to the details. Some of the paint looked touched up, the trigger was just a piece of metal and some of the other pieces of the gun looked of questionable quality. This doesnt look even close to the beautiful, yellow, quality DeWalt that my buddy loans me.So nervously i hook it up and put in a stack of 1 3/4" nails, they loaded nicely. I test the gun on a 2x4.I tap a couple in and the nails go so deep i thought it misfired. So i turn the little depth wheel under the tip,(which feels kind of cheap but actually works better than the dewalt) and tap a couple more till perfect. I start laying some base board and the gun has a very smooth and solid yet lighweight feel to it. Not one misfire. Also the gun doesnt jump around. and the tip looks like it would destroy the board but actually did very well. I finished the kitchen and hallway and am very impressed with the gun. I have used a DeWalt to baseboard and trim two entire houses, and comparing the two I actually think the WEN performs better. I have only shot a couple of hundred nails out of the WEN so I will have to see how it holds up. but for 35.00 I could buy a few of these at the cost of the others. It's even starting to look prettier than the DeWalt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worked flawlessly for me July 23, 2010

By Jeff

I used this stapler to put down ~400ft^2 of engineered hickory flooring. It was easy enough to setup. The adjustable cleat has lots of degrees of freedom, but once I set it up, it never moved or required any adjustment throughout the job. I like that the safety won't engage when the clip is empty preventing dry-fires. The drive depth was consistent from start to finish. I have an adjustable regulator on the hose end and once I dialed it in, I never had to touch it even after starting/stopping over multiple evenings. Though the magnesium makes it light, it still feels solid and well built. I'm happy with my purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bostitch EHF1838K November 5, 2011

I'm about halfway done putting down a 225 sq.ft. Bruce 5/16" thick oak floor. The only problem I had was when I first started the job, it wouldn't fire sometimes. I loosened the yellow thumb screws and re-adjusted the base, the gun worked perfect from that point on. The key to this stapler is to make sure the metal safety with the 2 curved hooks on the end is pushed all the way up when in position or else the gun won't fire. I'm not sure what the purpose of the safety button on the side is for, the gun still fires in either position. Also my gun still fires even when out of staples, not sure why. Otherwise I like the tool, very light and comfortable to use. It uses either 7/32" or 1/4" 18 ga. crown staples. I'm using a 1" long staple with 80-85 PSI.
